 Clean Tech Trends: Solar

Great Strides in Affordability Made, Many Opportunities Ahead

Solar had a great third quarter in 2012, it was in fact the third largest on record for the U.S. Solar industry. The U.S. market installed 1,992 MW in the first three quarters, exceeding 2011’s annual total of 1,885 MW. 2012’s total is estimated to surpass 3,000 MW. The U.S. total is now over 6.400 MW, enough to power more than 1 million American households.

The growing affordability due to falling costs has spurred the expansion. Q3 2012’s average cost of a completed PV system dropped by 33% since the beginning 2011. Solar panel prices decreased by 58% in that same time period according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. (more…)

Does Concentrated Solar Power Have the Answer to Intermittency Concerns?

by John Whitney AIA

For some time now, the intermittent nature of both solar and wind renewable energy generation systems has been a thorn in the side of the clean energy industry.  Coal, natural gas, and nuclear advocates have trumpeted the fact that generation capacity factors for their power plants range from 85% to 90% while solar and wind numbers are in the 20% to 35% range.  Over and over we get hammered with the question:  What happens when the sun goes down and the wind stops blowing?

Well, as renewable energy supporters have been correctly responding, the simple two-part reply is:  (more…)

Green Job Trends – the “Most Likely to Succeed”

Green Industry / Job Trends

This month, we call your attention to the 2010 Global Cleantech 100 Report –  published 10/12/2010 by the Cleantech Group.

The “Most Likely to Succeed” Cleantech Companies

The Cleantech Group puts out a list annually of the top 100 cleantech companies. Ranked by the cleantech community and industry insiders, the goal is to showcase the “most likely to succeed” private companies. The Lust List represents the crème de la crème; 2010 features Silver Spring Networks, Zipcar, Opower, Bridgelux, and BrightSource Energy.  This report highlights several interesting trends such as geographical and sectorial movement, venture capital investment and return, and effects of the government investment in the industry.

Dynamic Industries

57 of 100 companies are North American (55 are from the U.S., with California leading with 33 companies, followed by Massachusetts with 8 ) (more…)
