Non-Traditional / Alternate Media Resumes
The classic paper resume has already been replaced by the electronic version, but the format stays the same: a concise text-only document with a fairly standard format. Sure the format varies a bit electronically, the best example is the LinkedIn resume which is a quintessential “must have” for any professional who wants to be found these days.
Recruiters and employers alike need to have that classic paper resume (in electronic format!). Basically these folks are very busy and they don’t typically have time to peruse every applicant’s website or alternative media, at least not at the first round. Recruiters and large companies store resumes and so your classic resume must be in available in Microsoft Word format, with an alternate Acrobat PDF and sometimes a text version.
While Picasso first mastered classical art, he then turned to the Avant-Garde. Depending on your level of creativity, here are some additional and complementary ways to market yourself and approach new media resumes. These internet based media do not replace the resume, but may help you differentiate yourself.
LinkedIn
This is pretty mundane by now but just in case you don’t have your resume online at LinkedIn, go do it now! For networking with peers to being found by recruiters, LinkedIn is the professional forum du jour.
Website / Blog
There are some free websites and many free blogs that you can set up to market yourself. These allow you to make use of graphics and layouts to create a professional look, and you can use keywords and other SEO tricks to make yourself searchable.
Visual CV
If you aren’t a graphic artist but want to take it to the next level, the VisualCV is a fun tool focused on resumes. You can view numerous resumes, create one for free.
Video Resume — YouTube
If you have a webcam, or preferably a decent video camera and a tripod, you could make a video of yourself. There are any number of good and bad video resumes out there, just go to YouTube and type in “video resume”. Here are some examples:
Social Media Resume
SlideShare has a variety of “social media” resumes online. The site allows you to upload PowerPoint and KeyNote presentations as well as other documents. You can add audio. You can embed these on your blog, website or social media site. The fun just keeps going. A couple examples:
