Tech Compensation Trends

Tech SalariesTech Industry Average Annual Wages

 

While real wages may be down 8% in the US since 2006, the tech industry paid an annual average wage of $93,800 in 2012, which is 98% more than the average private sector wage of $47,400. And California tech workers earn the highest average annual wage of $123,900, according to the TechAmerica Foundation.

 

Software Services Leading

 

The Cyberstates 2013 Key Findings include that the software services sector grew by 63,900 jobs in 2012, a 3.5 percent increase. Leading the way in high-tech employment was California (968,800), Texas (485,600), New York (318,200), Virginia (285,400 – 9.8% of with private sector workforce), and Florida (270,900). Read more »

Competing for Talent, Immigrants Have Historically been Innovators, Job Creators.

A recent Wall Street journal article entitled: “A Better Idea for Green Jobs” should serve as a good reminder of our long history of immigrants creating innovation, building new companies, and starting tens of thousands of new jobs in the process.

The article reports that according to a Kauffman Foundation study, 25% of science and technology start-ups founded between 1995 and 2005 had either a foreign-born chief executive or lead technologist. Vivek Wadhwa, a Duke University researcher, reported that in 2005 those firms produced $52 billion in revenue with 450,000 employees. The majority (52%0 of Silicon Valley start-ups were immigrant led. Read more »

TechAmerica Reports Jobs Rebound

TechAmerica Foundation published its Cyberstates 2011 report on October 5. The key findings support a lot of the buzz on the tech industry over the last several months – good numbers!

The U.S. high-tech industry totaled 5.75 million jobs in 2010, down in 2010 by 115,800. A midyear jobs report by TechAmerica for the first six months of 2011 registers an increase of 115,000 tech jobs. Read more »

Jobs Growth Anemic, yet Senior Talent in Shortage in Certain Sectors

Leading up to the BLS employment report on Friday, ADP estimated private payrolls rose 114,000 in July. The BLS figures came in 117,000 nonfarm employment and 154,000 in total private employment. Gains were seen in health care, retail trade, manufacturing, and mining; while Government employment continued to decline. Manufacturing employment increased in by 24,000, professional and technical services increased by 18,000, Government employment decreased by 37,000. The unemployment rate stayed put at 9.1% (13.9 million people).

AESC / Executive Search

According to the Association of Executive Search Consultants’ (AESC), 66% of search professionals have a positive prediction for their industry in the second half of the year.  The biggest growth in demand for senior talent is in the Energy/Natural Resources sector. The United States is experiencing a “sustained resurgence of demand” according to AESC President, Peter Felix. Worldwide, the General Management/CEO/COO functions are anticipated to experience the greatest shortage of talent, followed by Business Development and then Engineering. Read more »
