As a former professional hockey player turned recruiter, I often find hockey terms and analogies relevant to technology recruitment. I left home at 17 to play hockey, played four years in the NCAA at Minnesota-Duluth, and then in the East Coast Hockey League. Fast forward, I am now a tech recruiter. Build Your Team from the Net Out

 

In hockey the coaches talk of building the team from the net out. This means starting with a rock-solid goalie, then building the defense, then the forwards, and on. The theory is that by preventing goals with solid defense and goal tending, you minimize scoring. You then build the middle with good centers to drive your offense. On an average day, I read about 100-200 resumes. Some are amazing, most are adequate, and some go down in flames. When you make mistakes on your resume, you are seriously inhibiting your career options. Here are some resume boo-boos I’ve seen recently – don’t make these!

 

  1. Stumble – Infographic resume!

 

If you are such a rock star designer that you figure your gorgeous infographic resume is all you need and you would never stoop to creating a rote, insipid text resume, well oops. Many companies use an ATS or CRM of some sort, and even if they don’t, their recruiter likely does. Infographic or other non-standard formats can’t be read by most ATS/CRMs and so your resume could get missed entirely in many searches. While the infographic may seal the deal, there’s no deal to speak of if you aren’t identified from the start. So have the mundane word document ready along with the extraordinary visual resume.

Social media and websites provide an interesting window into a person’s soft skills. Of interest is everything from how thoroughly and professionally people present themselves, to the content and comments that they choose to post on online media.

Video Interviewing

Some companies solicit video responses as a filtering mechanism that quickly gives a sense of a person’s soft skills. A company may ask candidates to answer a few questions in a video format to be submitted along with a resume or as the next step in the pre-interview process. So you find yourself with an offer from a new company, and whether you actively solicit a counter or you simply allow one to come, you are playing with fire. It is a highly risky move to accept a counter offer. These are the main reasons not to accept a counter offer.

 

1. Your Manager is Going to Hate You.

 

Okay, hate may be strong but s/he is not going to be happy with you. Once the relief that you are staying and that the projects underway haven’t been sabotaged by a sudden departure, negative feelings are going to seep in. The manager will likely harbor feelings of doubt about whether you solicited an offer just for leverage. S/he may worry that this incident will let loose a chain reaction, with others taking a stab at it. There’s going to be second guessing about whether you may try this again.
