Do Recent Tech Sector Job Cuts Worry You?

Tech-Sector Job Cuts Surged by 144% in the second quarter according to global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. The byline of the press release portends more job cuts caused by the diminishing sales of personal computers. Indeed, the technology sector layoffs reportedly more than doubled during the latest quarter. Computer job cuts jumped up to 16,404 in Q2. But despite this increase in tech-sector job cuts, overall the downsizing has slowed from a year ago.

What are the hottest growth cities in the tech/STEM sectors?

Forbes recently published an article “The Best Cities For Tech Jobs”, in which the author, Joel Kotkin, analyzed tech-related jobs (including software, data processing and Internet publishing), and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related) employment, in companies spanning manufacturing to business services to finance.

Interestingly, Silicon Valley isn’t in the top five despite the preponderance of high profile tech companies there. In fact, despite offering the most tech and STEM jobs in the U.S., Silicon Valley employed 170,000 less folks in 2011 than in 2000.

Coming in number one is the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro, with increased tech employment of 43% and STEM of 18% in the decade from 2001 to 2011. The last two years documented 12% growth in tech jobs, and 7.6% growth in STEM jobs. Read more »

Job Boards and Social Media May Replace Recruiters…

By Greg Schreiner, Clean Tech Recruitment Manager

Many people believe that job boards are as useful as recruiters, and may even replace them. Companies post jobs on Monster and niche boards. Job seekers are using social media to target their next job. Anyone can post a job pitch on YouTube, the world’s second largest search engine. Networking is viral, right? So why work with a recruiter?

Ironically, using the internet and working with a recruiter are quite opposite methods of locating the talent you need. And yet both are useful of course.

Remember that expression about searching for a needle in a haystack? It refers to a difficult or impossible search for a particular object amongst a huge mountain of similar objects.

Recruiters are often enlisted for the more difficult or critical talent searches. Sometimes the company doesn’t have the dedicated resources to comb the pile of resumes that can result from a job posting or other talent outreach. Often if the hiring manager isn’t the one reading the resumes initially, and the right talent may be overlooked while the hiring manager is barraged by less qualified or less suitable potential candidates.
