Senior Director of Data Services

The Marshall University Foundation is currently seeking a highly motivated, proactive,
organized, and strategic senior professional.
Fundraising at Marshall University is managed and coordinated by the Marshall
University Foundation, Inc. which has a centralized function for all campus philanthropic
activities. The mission of the Foundation is to support and promote the activities and
programs of Marshall University. This is accomplished by providing advice and counsel
regarding fundraising and philanthropy, investing and managing gifts and pledges for the
University and providing a strong base of private-sector support for the University.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President For Development, the Senior Director
of Data Services will manage the day to day operations, task distribution and associated
budget allocation of the Foundation’s Data Services team. This hands-on professional will
be responsible to design, develop and implement strategic technical solutions in support of
the Foundation’s overall goals and priorities. The Senior Director of Data Services will be
responsible to assess and comprehend legacy systems, to develop and document automated
application and reporting solutions as required, and to implement next generation
information systems and technical infrastructures. Responsibilities will include the
following categories, along with other duties as required and assigned:
• Managing the Data Services department’s daily operations, including task request
prioritization, assignment, and resolution.
• Managing all aspects of the Foundation’s data and data quality as well as software,
database, and hardware systems, including training and documentation.
• Analyzing business requirements, developing, and deploying automated software
solutions for the organization.
• Serving as a liaison between Marshall University’s IT department and Foundation
staff to resolve a variety of technical issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualities and experiences that ideal candidates should display include:
• Influences and builds relationships with Marshall University IT and Foundation
stakeholders at the senior and executive leadership level to support business
strategy alignment with the Marshall University Infrastructure, Ellucian Banner
applications, and accuracy of data delivery.

• Drives communication with Marshall University IT and respective business
functions to meet organizational business needs and goals through translation into
technical requirements.
• Accountable for data quality, ensuring complete, timely and accurate data.
• Oversees and manages policies, procedures, and activities associated with the
management of Foundation and Alumni data records.
• Ensures accurate and continuous improvement of data quality.
• Drives the vision in creating innovative solutions to be used to capture and report
data across the organization.
• Collaborates with Marshall University IT and reporting teams to deliver data
models and solutions that are used to generate advanced analytics that help drive
key business decisions.
• Communicates meaningful results that support the needs of the organization.
• Responsible for all budgeting associated with computer and data service purchases.
• Coordinates purchasing and use of consulting and data service providers utilized by
the organization to support internal business functions.
Leadership:
• Leads the data services team as well as external resources based on business need.
• Ensures team is staffed with qualified and highly motivated talent.
• Actively develops people within the organization and supports learning
opportunities as well as career development.
Requirements:
• College degree with emphasis in a technology-related discipline preferred or
equivalent training, knowledge, and work experience.
• A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in a technology driven
environment, with at least five (5) or more years in a leadership role.
• A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in web application design
and development using tools such as Oracle APEX or other web development tools.
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in report design and
development using a report writing tool such as Evisions ARGOS or Crystal Reports.
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in project management and
software solution design.
• Excellent knowledge and skills in a broad technology landscape with strong
experience in demonstrating appropriate balance of business and technical
capabilities.
• Demonstrated proficiency with complex data analytics spanning multiple databases,
technologies, and platforms.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and direct
the data services team.
• Professional level expertise in database and web technologies such as Oracle
RDBMS, Oracle APEX, Web application development, reporting software such as
ARGOS, Crystle Reports, etc.
• Experience in JavaScript, jQuery, XML is a plus.
• Experience in Ellucian BANNER is a plus.

• Capable of writing advanced database queries using SQL and PL/SQL of high
complexity.
• Demonstrated experience with multiple instances of medium to large scale system
implementation projects.
• Ability to negotiate, influence and drive results across cross-functional teams.
• Good judgment in evaluating benefits and risks and providing sound
recommendations.
• Self-motivated and ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and
attention to detail.
• Experience in change management practices.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas, facts, and technical information clearly
and concisely to executive management, as well as other internal customers both
verbally and written.
• Demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to work
with and influence other disciplines.
• Possess a strong desire to share knowledge, experience and acquired skills with
other members of the team.
• Relevant working experience in higher education is preferred, but not required.
Eligibility:
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
• Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
